Crete is the most populous island in Greece and one of the most popular summer destinations. It has plenty of rivers, lakes, mountains, and valleys. Heraklion is the largest city and the capital of the island. It is close to the palace of Knossos, which in ancient times was the cultural and trading center due to its port. Knossos has been called one of the oldest cities in Europe. The labyrinth of the Palace of Knossos was the place where the ancient myth of Theseus and the Minotaur has taken place as well as where Daedalus and Icarus carved their wings in order to escape from King Minos.
