A Historic Neighborhood Beneath the Shadow of the Acropolis

Written by The Heloni Team | today

Athens is a city where the past and the present exist together in perfect harmony. Behind every street, every neoclassical building, and every hidden corner lies a story waiting to be discovered.

Our offices at 22 Syngrou Avenue are located just a few minutes away from historic Koukaki, one of Athens’ most distinctive neighborhoods. Nestled beneath the Acropolis, Koukaki combines the vibrant rhythm of modern city life with the timeless atmosphere of history and culture.

The Story Behind the Name “Koukaki”

The neighborhood took its name from industrialist Dimitrios Koukakis, who was well known at the time for manufacturing metal beds. His residence stood out as it was almost the only building in the area. When people were asked where they lived, they would simply answer “at Koukakis’ place” (stou Koukaki). Over time, this everyday expression became the name of an entire neighborhood — a place that today is among Athens’ most beloved areas.

Seven Apartments Facing a Historic Landmark

Among the 23 Heloni Apartments, seven are located at 27 Kallisperi Street, in a location of remarkable historical importance, directly opposite the famous Kallisperi Residence.

The Kallisperi Residence is one of the most significant neoclassical buildings of early 20th-century Athens and is closely connected with the Kallisperi family — a family whose members dedicated their lives to education, the arts, and social contribution.

A Pioneer Who Changed Greek Education

Sevasti Kallisperi (1858–1953) was a true pioneer of her time. When she was denied entry to the University of Athens simply because she was a woman, she refused to abandon her dream. She continued her studies at the Sorbonne University in Paris, becoming the first Greek woman to earn a university degree.

Upon returning to Greece, she devoted her life to improving education and promoting women’s right to learn.

A Home Filled with Music

The rich history of this neighborhood became an inspiration for us. We discovered that the buildings surrounding our apartments are not simply places to stay — they are living pieces of Athens’ cultural heritage.

The very building that today houses the seven Heloni Apartments at Kallisperi Street was once the home of the distinguished Greek pianist Linda Leousi.

It was here, in 1987, that Linda Leousi founded her conservatory, transforming her residence into a place dedicated to music education and culture. Her presence left a unique musical imprint on the neighborhood.

Today, this musical legacy continues to live within the building itself. One of the Heloni Apartments houses Linda Leousi’s personal piano — an authentic piece of history that connects the present with the creative spirit of the home.

A Neighborhood of Remarkable People

The surrounding area has also been home to other remarkable personalities, including resistance heroine Iro Konstantopoulou and one of Greece’s greatest composers, Mikis Theodorakis, whose home in Koukaki became for decades a meeting place for artists, musicians, and cultural figures.

Where History Lives Today

The neighborhoods of the Acropolis, Koukaki, and Makrygianni continue to attract visitors from around the world. The view of the ancient monuments, the historic buildings, and the stories of the people who lived here create a unique atmosphere that defines the timeless spirit of Athens.

For us at Heloni Apartments, hospitality is not only about offering a beautiful place to stay. It is about sharing the stories of our neighborhood and inviting our guests to experience an Athens filled with history, culture, and authentic moments.

Because every stay is also a journey through time.
